Davis Index: Market Intelligence for the Global Metals and Recycled Materials Markets

Huaigang Special Steel, a subsidiary of China’s Jiangsu Shagang Group, is modernizing its six-strand billet caster to produce high-quality special bar steel quality (SBQ) grades.

The grades will expand the company’s reach to the automotive and mechanical engineering industries by producing additional steel grades such as bearing, gears, free-cuttings, and alloy structural steels. The operations are expected to be re-commissioned by the end of 2021.

The company has hired SMS Concast to develop a design that will allow the same annual production of the higher-end lines in only five strands from the present six. Huaigang is the first steel company to use the technology of dynamic mechanical soft reduction (DMSR) in China, according to a media statement by SMS Concast.

SMS Concast’s representative stated that the technology will give billet producers the ability to move toward special steel bar qualities more seamlessly. The company is also a steel flow monitoring system, homogenous heat transfer and stirring machines, and oscillating controls. The re-stranding system is designed for low
maintenance, high productivity, and precision.

Huaigang is based in Zhangjiagang, China. Jiangsu Shagang Group’s annual production capacity is 31.9mn mt of iron, 39.2mn mt of steel, and 37.2mn mt of rolled products.
