Norsk Hydro’s Brazilian subsidiary, Hydro Paragominas, has resumed the bauxite transport line to its alumina refinery, Alunorte, after shutting it for almost two months for scheduled maintenance.

According to the company’s release on Oct 8, Alunorte has resumed alumina refining and is now working toward bolstering production to make up for the lost time of the past two months when it was functioning at 35-40pc of its original capacity. Alunorte produces about 6.3mn mt of alumina in a year.

Hydro has also terminated a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Golar Power Brasil Participações and Centrais Elétricas Barcarena for the supply of liquified natural gas (LNG) to Alunorte, which was signed in July. However, Hydro will stick to LNG power for its refinery and is currently in talks with other suppliers, the company said in an Oct 12 release without disclosing further details.
