Norwegian producer Hydro plans to restart aluminium production at its Husnes plant by November end. Line B at the primary smelter has remained shut since 2009. After over a decade, the plant will utilize its remaining half capacity.
The production line was under technological upgrade since 2009 when it was shut amid the financial crisis. The upgrade cost Hydro around NOK1.5bn. Earlier this year, the recommencement of operations at line B was delayed due to the COVID-19 outbreak and the uncertainties it brought to the global market.
The Husnes smelter produced around 100,000mt of primary aluminium annually after line B was shut in 2009. After the restart, production at the plant is likely to double.
