The Vedanta Group’s, Hindustan Zinc (HZL) plans to build a 300,000mt per year greenfield zinc smelter plant in Doswada, Gujarat.
The company signed a memorandum of understanding with the Gujarat government on Wednesday to build this facility in GIDC Tapi in the region. HZL plans to invest Rs50-100bn, ($683mn-1.4bn) in the plant that is slated to become operational by 2022.
The zinc producer, which holding around 77pc of India’s zinc market said in a press release on Wednesday that the venture will likely boost the region’s economy while creating over 5,000 jobs both operationally and collaterally.
The plant will be a first for HZL in Gujarat and once completed, it will be among the lowest-cost zinc smelters, globally. The facility will produce other minor metals in addition to zinc and will be equipped with zero discharge technology.
HZL indicated that the site will be near key downstream consumer markets and ports, and will serve as a model plant by integrating technology, automation, and high environmental compliance standards.
