Davis Index: Market Intelligence for the Global Metals and Recycled Materials Markets

India’s steel ministry has provided some relief for ferrosilicon (FeSi) and ferronickel (FeNi) producers by extending the enforcement of Indian Standards on FeSi and FeNi products. The deadline has been extended to Oct 23, 2020.

Steel and steel products manufactured in India to be sold and traded in the domestic market are required to conform with the quality control specification set by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) Act, 2016.

Manufacturers producing steel for the domestic market need to obtain BIS certification, while steelmakers producing steel and steel products for exports need not comply to these standards as they are bound by their orders specification and standards applicable in the destination markets. Exporters of steel and steel products into India are required to register with the BIS and conform to the quality specifications.

The deadline for BIS registration and certification for six products including ferrosilicon, ferronickel, tool and die steels, high-speed tool steels, steel for valves in internal combustion engines and carbon manganese steel forgings for pressure vessels has been extended by three months.

BIS standards are applicable for several steel products, including steel wires for pre-stressed concrete, deformed steel bars and wires, epoxy coated rebars, galvanized steel sheets, mild steel wire rods and metal arc for welding, hot-rolled bars, steel strips for welded tubes and pipes, carbon steel cast billet ingots, blooms and slabs, hot-rolled carbon steel strip, alloy steel billets, blooms and slabs, fire resistant steel and structural weather resistant steel.

Steelmakers manufacturing stampings/ laminations/ cores of transformers made from BIS marked Grain Oriented Electrical Steel Sheet and other such products have to register with BIS by Sep 16, 2020.

The deadline for BIS registration of steel products such as structural steel rivet bars, cold-rolled steel strips for springs, steel railway rolling stock, steel for volute, helical and laminated springs for automotive suspension, steel for umbrella ribs, staples, clips, pins; cold-rolled medium, high carbon and low-alloy steel strip, cold-rolled steel strips for carbon steel razor, steel wire for needles and steel for many other application is Nov 15, 2020.

The registration deadline for steel used for piston pins, alloys used in electrical resistance heating elements, maraging steel bars and rods (Nickel 18pc), soft magnetic iron strips and other such specialised products is Feb 26, 2021.
