Registration is now mandatory for 46 copper and 43 aluminum products under a new import monitoring system, announced by India’s Commerce ministry.
The move is aimed at encouraging domestic production and reducing imports, per media reports on Monday.
The system will be effective Apr 12, onwards, and online registrations will start from Apr 5 media reports indicated citing a ministry notification. The ministry has said that importers can apply for registration, after the 60th day and by the fifth day before the consignment is expected to arrive.
The list of copper items includes blister copper, refined copper, copper bars, certain copper rods, copper alloys, and sanitary ware. Import registration for aluminum includes ingots, wire rods, aluminum scrap, powder for thermite process, and certain aluminum tubes and pipes.
