The country is trying to move from being a nickel ore producer to developing a full supply chain, including refining and making end products such as cathodes and precursors for electric vehicle (EV) batteries. According to media reports, the country plans to produce 120,000-240,000mt of the materials by 2024.

Reports indicated that a joint venture among PT Pertamina, a state energy provider, and Mining Industry Indonesia (Mind ID) will lead the production process. The country also plans to start manufacturing EVs in 2022.
