Davis Index: Market Intelligence for the Global Metals and Recycled Materials Markets

Indonesia semi-finished steel imports fell by 14pc to 471,216mt in December 2019 from the prior year month, according to Davis Index analysis. Imports also fell by 8pc in December compared to the prior month.


This was followed by Oman, the top supplier of semi-finished to Indonesia who claimed 30pc or 140,132 mt; UAE at 19pc or 91,428mt; Malaysia had 12pc or 55,260mt; Ukraine had 12pc or 54,555; Russia at 11pc or 50,162 mt, India saw 10pc or 45,505 mt and the rest came in from other countries.


In 2019, semi-finished steel imports from Indonesia were 4.6mn mt, up by 27pc from the prior year. The country’s ferrous scrap import is also down by 44pc in the December 2019 to 199,674mt from the prior year. Scrap imports fell by 44pc in December compared to November. 


Indonesia is focusing on increasing its domestic steel output and reduce dependency on billet imports. To support the local steel industry, Indonesian government is also encouraging increased imports of ferrous scrap.
