Indian Navy ship INS Viraat will be dismantled at Alang in September. The decision to scrap this aircraft carrier was made in late 2019.
The ship has been purchased by Shree Ram Group and is currently in Mumbai . INS Viraat would be the second aircraft carrier that would be dismantled at Alang in the past six years.
The vessel is 208.8-meter-long with a total displacement of 24,000 ldt. It will take around 8-10 months to completely dismantle the aircraft carrier. The ship is said to have cost over Rs500mn.
Following Bajaj’s footsteps in where the automaker launched a bike model designed from scrapped metal from India’s first aircraft carrier Vikrant, many two-wheeler makers are already eying to buy scrap emerging from the demolition.
Due to ongoing monsoons, recycling at Alang yards has slowed. Additionally, the delivery of the ship is also likely to be delayed.
