Iran exported 942,000 mt of sponge iron in the Iranian year 2019-20 (March 21, 2019 – March 20, 2020), up by 77pc from 533,000mt in the prior year, according to Iranian Steel Producers Association (ISPA) report cited by Iranian media.
The country’s total sponge iron production was 27.907mn mt, up by 6pc from 26.359mn mt, a year earlier.
Iran’s sponge iron consumption increased by 4pc to 26.96mn mt from 25.826mn mt in the year prior.
Iran plans to boost sponge iron production in the ongoing Iranian year with a 2mn mt capacity project among others in the south-eastern province of Kerman.
After India, Iran is the second largest producer of sponge iron in the world.
