Canada-based Ivanhoe Mines has signed a strategic partnership pact with Chinese mining giant China Nonferrous Metal Mining Group (CNMC) to explore, develop, and acquire mineral projects and work on production, smelting, and logistics opportunities in Africa, the company announced.

Ivanhoe is focusing on three major joint venture projects in Africa – the Kamoa-Kakula copper mine project, the redevelopment and upgradation of the Kipushi zinc-copper-germanium-silver mine in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), and the Platreef palladium-platinum-nickel-copper-rhodium-gold discovery in South Africa.

Ivanhoe Mines top bosses informed that the development of the Kakula Copper Mine is ahead of schedule and production could begin within a year. The company will also be exploring new copper discoveries in the DRC near the Kamoa-Kakula Project.

CNMC’s projects in Africa include Chambishi Copper Mine, Luanshya Copper Mine, Chambishi Copper Smelter, and Chambishi Leach Plant in Zambia along with Deziwa Copper & Cobalt Mine, Lualaba Copper Smelter, Kambove Copper & Cobalt Mine, Panda, Huachin & Mabende Leach Plant in the DRC.
