PT Indonesia Weda Bay Industrial Park (IWIP) halted operations at its nickel smelting facility located on Halmahera island due to flooding, the company said in a statement.
The facility is controlled by China’s Tsingshan Holding Group and France’s Eramet group.
As per the company, the island witnessed heavy rainfall for two days that led to flooding in some areas of the industrial park on Wednesday.
The company management is evacuating those stranded at the facility, while all operations have stopped, as per media reports.
It also shared a video of an excavator cleaning debris off a partially flooded street of the park.
IWIP spokesperson Bilal Zhau said that water levels have come down in some parts of the facility. There were no casualties due to the floods, he added.
The Weda Bay project became operational in April 2020 and has 30,000mt of annual capacity.
