India’s Jindal Steel and Power Limited (JSPL) has expressed interest in manufacturing shipping containers at Paradip, Odisha, which is on the east coast of India, according to local media reports. The plan will be implemented as a Make in India, Make in Odisha initiative.

 

The company is planning to set up a container manufacturing yard over a 100 acres land parcel provided by the Paradip Port Trust. It will be a port-based container manufacturing unit, said JSPL’s chairman Naveen Jindal said during a visit to the site.

 

JSPL is also keen on building a dedicated railway freight corridor from Angul to Paradip and is discussing the matter with concerned authorities. JSPL’s Angul unit in Odisha is one of the largest integrated steel plants in India with a production capacity of 6mn mt, of which 4.25mn mt is produced through blast furnace mode and 1.8mn mt through DRI mode. The unit also houses a 1.2mn mt plate mill.
