JSW Steel USA has restarted production through its modernized electric-arc furnace (EAF) at the Mingo Junction integrated plant in Jefferson County, Ohio.

According to media reports, the company completed the installation of the new Tenova Consteel EAF on Monday. It will produce 1.5mn mt of steel per year, same as the furnace it replaced. The EAF was shut down in August 2020 due to a slump in steel demand in the region. The company laid off 160 employees at that time. JSW then decided to use the downtime to revamp its equipment.

Apart from the EAF, the plant also comprises a continuous slab caster and a hot-strip rolling mill, which can produce 3mn mt of 72-inch wide hot-rolled coil per year.
