Turkey’s Kaptan Demir Çelik (Kaptan Iron & Steel) has ordered the components for the Marmara Ereğlisi upstream wire rod mill with 650,000mt annual capacity from Primetals. The complete installation and commissioning are expected in mid-2022.
The mill will prepare the round feedstocks in intermediate sizes to be rolled and finished in the wire rod outlet. In targeting the engineering and automotive markets domestically and abroad, the mill is processing high-value products such as carbon, SBQ, and austenitic stainless steel grades.
The design, apparatus, and process of the new upstream mill will be ready to incorporate an additional bar outlet in the future with the capacity to produce round bars up to 130mm in diameter. The upstream mill will process billets with square dimensions of 130, 160, and 200mm and a length of 12mtrs with prepared feedstock ranges from 17-33mm.
Kaptan Iron & Steel is part of the Kaptan Group with operations in steel production, shipping, port management, transport, power, quarrying, recycling, and shipbuilding. The company produces steel billets, rebar, and square, equal angles, flat, and profile bars.
Guilin Pinggang Iron and Steel
China’s Guilin Pinggang Iron and Steel recently also purchased an electric arc furnace with a 120mt twin ladle from Primetals. The furnaces were installed in June 2021 at a new mill in Pingle near Guilin in Guangxi Province to focus on rebar production. Guilin’s present annual capacity is 1.2mn mt.
The Quantum EAF selected reduces power consumption by half compared to conventional technology which translates into savings and lower carbon emissions by up to 30pc.
