Davis Index: Market Intelligence for the Global Metals and Recycled Materials Markets

The state government has warned iron and steel units located in Katedan Industrial area in Greater Hyderabad Municipality to shift outside Outer Ring Road (ORR) limits. The industries have received a warning that their land allotments in Vikarabad will be cancelled if they fail to relocate within six months.

Telangana State Industrial Infrastructure Corporation (TSIIC) had allotted lands to these pollution-causing iron and steel plants at Rakamcheral Industrial Park in Vikarabad to relocate them beyond city limits. The corporation has issued notices to the managements of these steel plants to relocate so as to curb the movement of goods trucks.

TSIIC chairman Gyadari Balamalluhad reiterated his government’s resolve to shifting polluting industries to the outskirts, as per the High Court order.

The decision to shift these industries was taken in 2012, but little progress has happened since then. The present Telangana government has expedited measures to shift the industries. There was a communication with the management of these industries and most units had agreed to shift after TSIIC provided land in Vikarabad. But have failed to shift despite reminders and notices.

The official clarified that notices were issued to 20 iron and steel industries in Katedan. He added that the general industrial park in Vikarabad will have all facilities and is not exclusive to the iron and steel industries.
