Mexico and Brazil’s steel exports to the US in September fell by 50.4pc and 13.7pc to 187,810mt and 29,962mt, respectively, compared to shipments in the same month of 2019, according to figures from the United States Census Bureau.

 

US steel imports from South and Central American countries also fell by 36.3pc to 40,410mt in the same period under comparison. 

 

Carbon non-alloy steel

 

Mexican carbon non-alloy steel exports to the US in September fell short by 28.2pc to 174,836mt from 243,603mt in the prior year period while Brazil’s exports in this segment rose to 26,276mt, up 9.3pc from 24,026mt in September 2019. Exports of carbon non-alloy steel from South and Central American countries also rose by 21.2pc to 36,672mt in September from 30,256mt shipped in the same period of 2019.

 

Alloy steel products

 

Exports of alloy steel from Mexico to the US were down 92.1pc in September to 10,308mt, from 131,723mt in the prior year. Brazil’s alloy steel shipments to the US also fell by 67.9pc to 2,979mt 9,288mt in the same comparative period. Meanwhile, exports of alloy steel products to the US from South and Central American countries plunged by 90.4pc to 3,025mt in September from 31,809mt in the same month last year.
