Liberty Steel Group announced the appointment of Paramjit Kahlon as chief executive officer (CEO) of its primary steel and integrated mining businesses, on Monday.

 

Kahlon joins Liberty from ArcelorMittal where he held top steel executive level positions from 2008-2019, including chief technical officer, chief pperating officer and most recently as chief executive officer for its CIS and Middle East locations.

 

In his new role, Kahlon will manage Liberty’s primary steelmaking and integrated mining operations in Ostrava, Czech Republic, Galati, Romania, and Whyalla and Tahmoor in Australia. In this newly created role, he will combine these operations into a single entity as part of the company’s global strategy and initiative to reach carbon neutrality by 2030, Sanjeev Gupta executive chairman, Liberty Group said.

 

The new CEO’s immediate attention will be on dealing with effects from COVID-19 and to secure operations to maintain long-term sustainability by investing in lower carbon technologies such as hydrogen, DRI and Electric Arc Furnaces, the company indicated in the announcement.
