Liberty Steel UK plans to double steel production capacity at its Rotherham steelworks, South Yorkshire to 1.0mn mt per year by investing £60mn ($81mn).
According to a release on Dec 15, the company plans to improve production at its electric arc furnace and small bloom caster and upgrade its N-Furnace to increase ferrous scrap melting capabilities. Liberty will also make upgrades to the Thrybergh Bar Mill and install a new rod block to produce wire rod and de-bar in coil to boost supply of sustainably produced reinforcing bar – branded ‘GreBar’ by the company.
The company plans to supply GreBar for schools, hospitals, houses, energy facilities and transport links as part of the UK government’s £100bn “Build Back Better” infrastructure spending plan.
Furthermore, Liberty and Acenta Steel, part of the Aartee Group, have agreed a deal to combine their engineering bar divisions to deliver “stronger, more efficient high precision steel”. The deal will create Aartee Bright Bar, to serve the automotive, general engineering, hydraulics, and yellow goods industries in the UK.
