Liberty Steel’s UK wing is set to ship its first round of green steel reinforcing bars from its Rotherham rolling mill.
The steelmaker has received orders for close to 10,000mt of the product for the UK’s construction industry, including that of the HS2 rail line. The company will ship these orders before the end of the year, a news release dated Nov 5 indicated.
Next year, the GFG alliance subsidiary plans to supply its ‘Grebar’ product to construction projects to curtail the country’s dependence on imported steel. According to the release, the UK currently imports half of the 1.2mn mt of rebar it consumes in a year.
Over the coming months, Liberty intends to increase the production of Grebar to around 300,000mt per year to meet the existing demand within the UK for construction and replacement of existing infrastructure.
