Davis Index: Market Intelligence for the Global Metals and Recycled Materials Markets

European miner LKAB has resumed operations at its Kiruna mine after suspending operations due to a seismic event. The company has restarted production at the mine with an output of about 25,000-30,000mt that is about one-third of crude ore in a day, according to a company statement.

The mine was evacuated on May 18, after a 3.3 magnitude earthquake on the local scale hit at a level of 1,146 meters from the zeroing point in the mine’s footwall.

The company will ensure uninterrupted deliveries with the present production volume, inventories at hand and halt in the upcoming maintenance at KA3/KK4 processing plants.

Though, there is no clarity when the production rate is to return to usual levels. LKAB is thus looking for an alternative to compensate for the production deficit. The company’s annual production capacity is 35mn mt of iron ore and 14.9mn mt of pellets.
