The Indian government’s decision granting conditional resumption of construction and mining operations amid the extension in lockdown could revive demand for steel, according to the Indian Steel Industry (ISA).

The new guidelines allow mining, construction and infrastructure activities which will stimulate demand for the steel sector, said the industry body. Permission for interstate transportation of goods and movement of workers will help the manufacturing sector, which is vital for the steel sector, said ISA in a tweet.

The industry body thanked the government for the revised guidelines which exempts logistics, agriculture, manufacturing and various socio-economic sectors to resume business activities from April 20 despite the extension of COVID-19 lockdown until May 3. The government has asked industries to resume economic activities in certain areas by practising strict social distancing and hygiene measures.
