Malaysia’s aluminium scrap imports surged by 177pc in Feb 20, from a year ago on increased demand from the country’s secondary alloy manufacturers. Malaysia’s exports of unwrought aluminium alloys in Feb 20 increased by 60pc. Exports to China surged by 528pc from 2,869mt in Feb 19 to 18,025mt in Feb 20. China’s demand for aluminium alloys increased since late 2019, after it’s government issued strict restrictions on scrap imports.
Malaysia’s ferrous scrap imports dropped by 8pc in Feb 20. Imports from the US fell by 39pc. Domestic demand in the US was healthy since the beginning of 2020. Malaysia turned to Japan for ferrous scrap imports, which offered scrap at cheaper rates and with quicker delivery time.
