Metalloinvest has tasked Tenova with modernizing its hot-briquetted iron (HBI) plant at Lebedinsky GOK in Gubkin, Russia.

The HBI-1 plant will get two new oxygen injectors, an additional boiler, a carbon dioxide extractor, and a fuel buffer tank, among other equipment. The Russian steelmaker expects these changes to raise the plant’s output by more than 10pc (about 100,000mt a year) while also improving the recovery grades when it is commissioned in early 2023.

The HBI-1 plant currently produces 1mn mt of HBI per year, along with two similar plants at the facility, which have a combined annual HBI capacity of 4.5mn mt.
