Mexican car production and sales declined by 15pc in January on an annual basis to 278,711 units according to the National Institute of Statistical and Geographic Information (Inegi).
According to Inegi’s statement on Feb 8, domestic sales fell by 22.5pc to 81,203 units in January from 104,852 vehicles in the same month in 2020. Exports fell by 6.3pc to 223,533 units in January this year, from 238,749 cars in the prior year period.

Car shipments to the US fell by 1.3pc to 182,056 units in January from 184,514 vehicles exported in January 2019. During this period under comparison, exports to Canada also decreased by 9.8pc to 16,948 cars from 18,795 vehicles and shipments to Colombia were down by 38.8pc to 3,019 cars from 4,930 units.
Shipments to Brazil, on the other hand, rose by 66.9pc to 1,749 vehicles in January from 1,048 cars in the same month of 2020, and shipments to Chile rose by 52.1pc to 1,235 vehicles from 812 units.
Exports to Europe dropped by 49.9pc to 10,186 units last month from 20,349 cars a year ago while exports to Asia rose by 31.2pc to 2,748 units from 2,095 units.
