Mexico’s flat steel production dropped by 16.7pc to 6.33mn mt between January and November 2020, compared to the same period in 2019.

Seamless pipe production declined by 6.6pc to 1.21mn mt in the first eleven months of 2020, compared to the same prior-year period, according to media reports that cited figures from Mexico’s steel distributor centers (Conadiac). Long steel production was flat at 7.8mn mt on an annual basis in the January-November period 2020.

The steel industry was affected because of lower demand from the construction industry due to the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, Conadiac noted.

Construction activity dropped by 8pc in November 2020 compared to the same month last year on a 20.9pc decline in construction of civil engineering works, and a 5.9pc and 3.4pc drop in construction of new buildings and of specialized infrastructure projects, respectively, according to the National Statistics Agency (Inegi).
