Mexico’s industrial output fell by 7.5pc on an annual basis in September due to a decline in construction, mining and manufacturing. Domestic steel production was also hampered.


Construction activity fell by 17.2pc in September, compared to the same month last year,, while manufacturing and mining decreased by 5pc and 3pc, respectively, the National Statistics Agency (Inegi) said in a statement without disclosing volume.


Construction of civil engineering works fell by 25.8pc while that of new buildings and specialized infrastructure projects also fell by 16.5pc and 1.3pc, respectively, in the same period, Inegi said.


The Mexican Mining Chamber – Camimex – had predicted a 17pc decline in output for 2020 earlier this year. Mexico’s crude steel output also fell short by 3.9pc to 1.40mn mt in September, compared with 1.45mn mt in the same month of 2019, according to the latest figures released by the World Steel Association (worldsteel).
