MMK intends to reconstruct the gas treatment plant at its oxygen converter shop in Russia to capture secondary emissions from the facility’s Nos. 1, 2 and 3 converters.

The shop produces close to 10mn mt of steel a year, but it’s not equipped to handle the secondary emissions being released. As a part of this reconstruction, which comes at a $34.3mn price tag, MMK signed a contract with Austrian firm Primetal Technologies in February worth $26.4mn, which will see the latter supply basic engineering services and the equipment needed for the reconstruction.

With this reconstruction project, the total dust emission from the oxygen converter shop will decline by 500mt a year.
