Davis Index: Market Intelligence for the Global Metals and Recycled Materials Markets

A new mine holding an estimated 4.6mn mt of copper and 420,000mt of cobalt opened in Congo this week alongside a processing plant.

 

The Deziwa mine, a joint venture between majority-owned China Nonferrous Metal Mining Company (CNMC) and the Democratic Republic of Congo’s state mining company Gécamines, is targeting 80,000mt of copper and 8,000mt of cobalt production per annum. 

 

Deziwa, the $880mn project for which construction began in May 2018, will be owned by CNMC for nine years with a possible two-year extension.

CNMC owns 51pc of Deziwa and Gécamines the remaining 49pc.
