Nexa Resources is operating its Peruvian zinc smelter at Cajamarquilla at a reduced capacity and with a smaller workforce, the company announced in an update to its COVID-19 response.

The zinc producer, which has three of its five zinc mining operations in Peru, didn’t disclose how its volumes would be impacted by the reduced mining and smelter operations, but noted that it was cooperating with the government’s extended shutdown to contain the virus.

The Peruvian government, which initially announced the shutdown would end April 26, has extended it to May 10. Nexa, which, like other Peruvian mines, is operating at reduced rates during this period, said it was preparing to resume operations following the extension date.

Nexa operates three underground zinc mines in Peru and two in the state of Minas Gerais in Brazil. The company is also developing the Aripuanã Project in Brazil, which is slated to become its sixth mine upon completion.
