Davis Index: Market Intelligence for the Global Metals and Recycled Materials Markets

Russia’s steelmaker NLMK Group has announced a partnership with Austria’s K1-MET a European Competence Centre for the development of advanced metallurgical and environmental processes.

Under this partnership, NLMK aims to understand the effects of using recyclable material efficiently in the steelmaking process. Other companies like Voestalpine, Primetals Technologies, Austria and a few universities under K1-MET will be contributing to the project’s development.

NLMK, Voestalpine and K1-MET plan to develop a technology to process zinc-containing waste to separate zinc from the iron-containing material so it can be reused in the thousands of tonnes of iron production cycle. This will ensure that more secondary resources are used instead of primary, which will help reduce greenhouse gas emission.

NLMK has production facilities across Russia, Europe and the US and produces more than 17mn mt of steel per annum while K1-MET collaborates with different steel companies globally to address the impact of steel production on energy efficiency, circular economy and climate impact.
