Davis Index: Market Intelligence for the Global Metals and Recycled Materials Markets

NLMK has resumed the installation of steel structures for a new transformer steel plant to be commissioned in H1 2022 in Maharashtra, India.

Construction and equipment installation is planned for the end of 2021 after it was delayed due to the resurgence of COVID-19 cases and the lockdowns that followed.

The $100-150mn investment will have an annual capacity of 64,000mt of premium grade transformer steel. The mill will have electrical insulating coating, straightening annealing, cutting, and laser processing lines to produce the finished products.

NLMK has a 25pc market share of the transformer steel market in India and the additional plant is expected to expand the steelmaker’s market share. The company also has a metal service center in India, which receives NLMK produced steel and processes for transformer producers.

NLMK has an annual production capacity of 17mn mt of steel via its assets in Europe, Russia, and the United States.
