Davis Index: Market Intelligence for the Global Metals and Recycled Materials Markets

Belgian steel plate producer, NLMK Clabecq has launched a €30mn ($35.5mn) venture to advance its rolling mill by expanding its thin gauge and high strength value-added steel plate varieties.

The project will enable NLMK to produce high-strength, ultra-thin plates with improved tolerances while lowering costs and CO2 emissions. The renovations occurring at the steel producer’s rolling mill consist of putting in a new descaling structure with two original descalers and rebuilding the four-stand finishing mill that will result in a distinct blueprint for plate producers. This transformation and finishing mill overhaul is scheduled for late 2021 completion.

The move is in line with NLMK’s strategy to establish itself as a competitor in the thin-gauge steel plate market. The steelmaker has completed the first stage of its transformation plan, introduced in 2019. The operational upgrades are made to meet the company’s goals despite the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.
