Noranda’s New Day alumina refinery in Gramercy, Louisiana will resume alumina production and bauxite refining after a precautionary shutdown in the wake of Hurricane Ida.
A spokesperson from Noranda confirmed there was no serious damage to the alumina refinery or its infrastructure from the storm. The company expects to resume production at 80pc capacity. The Gramercy refinery has a 1.2mn mt smelter-grade and chemical-grade alumina production capacity. The plant produced 1.18mn mt of alumina in 2020.
Concord Resources upped its stake in New Day in July 2021, buying a majority stake from Dada Holdings. Noranda’s facility is the only remaining alumina refinery in the US. Concord also owns a minority stake in the St Ann bauxite operation in Jamaica.
