Metso Outotec has signed a contract with Nornickel to modernize one of the two smelting line at its Nadezhda Metallurgical Plant in Russia.
Nornickel will invest close to €90mn ($110mn) on the project and expects delivery of new equipment in H1 2022. The delivery will include Metso’s flash smelting furnace, heat recovery boiler and other advanced digital products, it stated. Metso Outotec’s flash smelter is one of the economical and clean processes, with high metal recovery, the release from Nornickel stated. The replacement of old smelter equipment is slated to increase the smelter’s efficiency as well as production capacity. Actual volumes were not disclosed.
Earlier this month, Metso Outotec indicated that it would lay off up to 160 employees in its metals refining division to cut costs due to lower market demand.
