Davis Index: Market Intelligence for the Global Metals and Recycled Materials Markets

American steel giant Nucor began operations at its new mini-mill in Frostproof, Florida on Dec 18.

According to a Jan 11 release by Danieli, the supplier of the mini-mill’s equipment, melting, casting, and rolling operations are underway in endless mode. The mill has the capacity to produce 380,000mt of steel rebar per year, ranging from #3 to #11 in straight bars up to 60ft and coils up to 5mt. Danieli’s endless rolling and casting machinery also enables lower carbon emissions and energy use.

The mill’s electric arc furnace (EAF) will be fed entirely with locally-sourced scrap metal and meet steel rebar demand in the region. Notably, Nucor operates an identical mill in Sedalia, Missouri, which was commissioned in January 2020. Nucor Sedalia has a capacity of 408,233mt per year.
