US steelmaker Nucor has finalized its plans to set up a new steel tube mill at its Gallatin Sheet facility in Kentucky.
According to the company’s release on Mar 26, the steelmaker will spend $164mn to set up the mill, which will produce 250,000mt of hollow structural section (HSS) steel tubes per year. Nucor believes that the Gallatin site is the ideal location for the tube mill since it is close to growing solar projects and also a large consuming region of HSS tubes.
The steelmaker plans to bring the mill into operation by mid-2023 and create 70 new jobs. The new Gallatin tube mill will be operated by Nucor’s Tubular Products division, which has eight plants with a combined capacity of 1.36mn mt.
