The state of Michigan approved a revised air permit allowing Padnos Iron and Metal to build an outdoor shredder in Howell, after year of denying requests from the scrap firm.
Padnos intends to install a new metal processing facility, including an outdoor shredder for scrap metal with waste separation for recyclable materials. A “Permit to Install” was approved with modifications on Dec 18 by the Environmental Department. The processor has been litigating with the city after being denied three different requests from the Zoning Board. Padnos reapplied for the state air permit in October.
Required changes for the permit lowered the lead emissions limit and increased the frequency of tests for volatile organic compounds, and certain particulate matter along with emissions testing for hexavalent chromium.
