Davis Index: Market Intelligence for the Global Metals and Recycled Materials Markets

Monthly copper production increased by 40.1pc this year in Peru, compared to the same month in 2020, reported the National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI).

INEI indicated in a statement on Jun 24 that the end of the National Emergency declared by the Peruvian government last year owing to the COVID-19 pandemic allowed mines to ramp up production in April.

Miners like Antamina, Las Bambas, Cerro Verde, Nexa Resources, Hudbay Peru, Sociedad Minera El Brocal, and Shouxin Peru all reported higher production, INEI noted without disclosing their volumes.

Regionally, copper production growth was led by the Ica province where output increased by 717.8pc in April on an annual basis, followed by Huacavelica with an increase of 408.2pc, and Apurimac where production rose 103.8pc. Puno where copper production declined by 46.2pc along with Junín (-31.6pc), and Tacna (-7.0pc) were the only three provinces to report a decline in output of the red metal during the month under review.
