Marcegaglia plans to complete two cogeneration plants in Ravenna and Gazoldo Degli Ippoliti in Italy by the beginning of 2021 to improve its efficiencies.

Beyond revamping a galvanizing line at the Ravenna plant, the steel processor is investing in energy self-sufficiency and carbon emissions reduction at its Italian facilities. The line revamp will result in an additional 160mtof steel being processed per hour.

The cogeneration plants will be dedicated to producing electricity, steam, and hot water to facilitate energy self-sufficiency at the two facilities. The company said in a press statement on September 15 that the technology selected for these units provides clean combustion with lower maintenance requirements.

Marcegaglia will produce 35.2MW at the Ravenna plant and 21.4MW at the Gazoldo plant through these units. The company processes 6.2mn mt of steel per year through its 28 plants worldwide.
