Peru’s Ica region’s economy grew 11.7pc in the first quarter of 2021, largely due to a 25.3pc increase in its mining production, reported the National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI).
Two of the main zinc producers in Peru, Nexa Resources and Minera Shouxin, are located in this region. The combined output of these two companies was11.2pc of the total 391,000mt mined in Peru from January to April 2021.
Iron ore extraction also contributed significantly to Ica’s mining production growth. Peru produced 2.8mn mt of ferrous ore in Q1 2021 with Shougang Hierro having a 98pc share of total output.
The region also benefited from the increase in the production of copper, lead, gold, and silver, as well as a rise in tin refining activity.
