Anglo-Australian miner Rio Tinto has appointed Ben Wyatt, an indigenous Australian as a director. Wyatt is a former Treasurer for the Western Australia state government and has held also various ministerial portfolios of including Finance, Energy and Aboriginal Affairs.

In 2020, the miner received a lot of flak from the country’s aboriginals after it destructed a 46,000-year-old aboriginal site during its expansion in the Pilbara region. The rock shelters at Juukan Gorge were considered to be sacred. Shareholder groups, however, state that the appointment could raise concerns over this conflict, according to media reports.
