Eicher Motor’s subsidiary, motorcycle manufacturer Royal Enfield has decided to halt production temporarily at its Chennai units, against the backdrop of rising number of COVID-19 cases in the country.
The company has three units in Thiruvottiyur, Oragadam and Vallam Vadagal in the state of Tamil Nadu, which will be shut from May 13-16. Maintenance procedures will be undertaken in this period.
The company declared that its ability to meet the auto demand would not be impacted despite the lockdowns across states and union territories, which is impacting retail operations.
In February, the company had announced on ramping-up production when global demand was recovering sharply. Production in December had reached 75,000 units a month. The company’s total production capacity is around 950,000 units annually.
Several other two-wheeler manufacturers including Hero MotoCorp, Yamaha and four-wheeler manufacturers like Maruti Suzuki, M&M, MG Motors have also shut their plants in May.
