Davis Index: Market Intelligence for the Global Metals and Recycled Materials Markets

Russian aluminium manufacturer Rusal starts production of improved anti-corrosion anodes that protect critical structures in the oil and gas and maritime industry. This product is part of Rusal’s value-added products strategy to mitigate the drop in aluminium prices. These anodes will be produced at the company’s smelter in Volgograd and will be used in the manufacturing of critical equipment used in shipbuilding, oil and gas and other heavy industries.

The aluminium manufacturer has recently changed its strategy to produce more value-added products (VAP) from aluminium alloys following a downward spiral in the price of aluminium of LME. Rusal offers five types of anodes produced from Zn-Mn aluminium alloy to protect metal products from corrosion and challenging environments. Initially, the company will produce 50mt of anodes per month and production will increase with demand.

Rusal has invested RUB20mn ($0.28mn) for product development. The company has sent test samples to potential customers for trial and certification. The products will undergo certification as per Russian maritime regulations.
