Aluminum maker Rusal has completed the installation of an automated cleaning system for crude aluminum at its Khakas Aluminium Smelter (KhAZ) in Russia.

 

The company said in a media statement on Nov 5 that the new system, made in Canada, will expand the share of its alloys and value-added products produced at the smelter. 

 

The unit, which will begin commercial operations by the end of this year will process and clean molten aluminum in a 10mt crucible. The company did not disclose the aluminum processing capacity of the new system but said that it had invested $2.7mn in installing it at the smelter.

 

The Russian aluminum maker’s KhAZ smelter produced 227,000mt of aluminum in the nine months ended Sep 30, up 3.8pc from 219,000mt during the same period last year. The plant’s aluminum output in Q3 2020 increased by 13.2pc to 81,000mt from 71,000mt during the same quarter last year.
