Russian car sales increased 6.8pc in July to 141,924 units compared to prior year, according to AEB Automobile Manufacturers Committee (AEB AMC). From Jan-July, Russia’s auto sales are down 19.3pc to 920,363 car units. 

 

In Russia, Chinese car sales recorded the highest growth in July with FAW clocking a 254pc growth from last year, Changang’s sales were up 291pc from the year prior. 

 

Skoda recorded 69pc sales growth in Russia, up from the prior year with 12,326 cars sold. Hyundai sold around 14,319 units, up 3pc from the prior year. Volkswagen sold 10,735 units, up 29pc from the year prior. Russian manufacturer Avtovaz sold the most number of cars, with sales of 31,180 units in July, up 6pc from the year prior. 

 

July is the first month this year which recorded a significant sales growth. Car sales recovery in Russia was awaited since 2019. In July, car sales improved amid deferred demand from April-June period due to lockdown and the weakening Ruble. The Russian government measures also supported healthy sales growth. 

 

Market demand is, however, unpredictable, according to the auto association, given the economic condition of the country, potential price measures, lockdowns and economical and financial impact of the pandemic could subdue demand. If lockdowns do take place, support from the government will be important for the country’s car dealers and manufacturers.
