SA Recycling, a JV between Adams Steel and Australia’s Sims Limited, has acquired the scrap processing assets of Houchens Industries operating as Southern Recycling in the Midwest. The assets include a scrap yard and shredder in Nashville, Tennessee, and yards in Owensboro and Bowling Green, Kentucky.
The assets will continue operating as normal with the present staff, but the company name is transferring to SA Recycling immediately. Neither the financial value of the deal nor the monthly volumes transacted were disclosed. A market participant noted that strategic investments and market changes, along with extensive experience by the SA management team, may expand volume buys and mill relationships in the region.
SA Recycling has been expanding into the Southeast and now Midwest since 2016 through acquisitions. Regional penetration began with Newell Recycling Southeast in 2016, Tennessee Valley Recycling in 2017, Georgia Recyclers in 2018, some yards operated by Alter Trading in 2018, and Steel City Recycling in 2020. In early 2021, SA Recycling moved into Florida with the acquisition of Capital Scrap, Metals USA, and Southern Scrap.
SA now operates 15 shredders, port loading operating in California and Georgia, and scrap yards in the Midwest, West Coast, and Southeast for a total of 87 scrap processing facilities throughout the US.
Southern Recycling was started in 1981 in Bowling Green, Kentucky, and acquired by Houchens in 1999.
