State-owned steel giant SAIL on Friday has supplied over 9,000mt of steel for the all-weather Atal Tunnel which will help to cut the distance between Manali and Leh by 46km.

Two-third of the total 15,000mt of steel used in the project is supplied by SAIL, out of which 6,500mt was TMT, 1,500mt was structural and 1,000mt plates for fabricated beams. Sail also supplied a small quantity of GP/GC sheets for construction of stations and control rooms.

As part of India’s Atmanirbhar movement, Sail will produce strong steel needed to build infrastructural projects across the country, said Chairman Anil Kumar Chaudhari. The tunnel will be of great significance to the locals as well as for the strategic movement of troops. It is set to become the world’s longest road tunnel at an altitude of 3,000 metres above sea level.

RINL or Vizag Steel is also associated with the project and has supplied a major share of TMT approximately 8,500mt for the tunnel project.
