Davis Index: Market Intelligence for the Global Metals and Recycled Materials Markets

South Africa’s Scaw Metals Group has engaged Danieli to upgrade its wire rod line in Johannesburg to improve product handling and streamline maintenance.

The line, which has been operating since 1997, will be updated with a new high-speed shear, new laying of heads and pinch rolls, and a new QTR cooling line. The new machines allow for automatic trimming to remove three of the line’s operators and will allow for more precise cutting. The production line will be controlled by Danieli Automation’s technology to facilitate streamlined maintenance. Testing and restart is expected between December 2020 and January 2021.

Scaw Metals also has a presence in Australia, Namibia, Zimbabwe, and Zambia. The company produces rolled steel, wire rod, and processes scrap. The company produces around 0.5mn mt of crude steel annually in an electric arc furnace (EAF) with recycled steel scrap and directly reduced iron (DRI) from its rotary kilns. The company processes regional scrap at the Germiston site with the largest scrap shredder in Africa.
