Schnitzer Steel plans to upgrade its existing recycling technology in the US with the aim of recovering 20pc more non-ferrous material in 2021.

The steelmaker, which has a large ferrous and non-ferrous recycling operation, said in its 2020 sustainability report released on Dec 15 that the updates would provide the company with enhanced revenue and a significant reduction in adverse impact on the environment.

In FY 2020, ended September 30, 2020, Schnitzer processed more than 3.6mn mt of ferrous and over 249,000mt (5.1mn lb) of non-ferrous scrap, the company said. Moreover, the company noted that its Pick n Pull facilities had recycled end-of-life vehicles, while its Cascade Steel Mill uses scrap metal as its primary raw material to produce finished steel products.
